Things can change in your life so quickly that you sometimes won’t even know what hit you. Last week a young man I know experienced something that I am sure he never dreamed would happen to him. He’s fourteen years old and has had to have one of his legs amputated just below the knee. A freak accident that nobody could have predicted has robbed him of some of his hopes, dreams, and aspirations. Basketball, football, running… things he enjoyed and was good at now put on a shelf for a season, possibly to be relearned but things will never be as they were. So often we just move from day to day taking things for granted and complaining about things we don’t like. Stepping back, slowing down, and taking time to appreciate what is going right, or even digging and finding the something positive in the midst of what seems to be going wrong is something that I am learning to do as a practice. We don’t know what tomorrow will bring, but we do know that we have today. We may not be where we want to be. We may not be where we thought we’d be by now. We may have been mistreated, overlooked, cheated, or left out… and as a result we may have ended up somewhere that we never imagined. Whatever the case, I choose to find something positive, something about which I can be grateful, and something that will keep me hopeful and looking forward to things changing for the better. What about you?
